We are looking for a passionate Engineering Team Lead to join our Education Technology Development Team. As a key member of our team, your main goal is to lead an in-house engineering team focused on delivering the technical requirements for Education's digital products. The role holder will take the lead on coding standards and tooling on which they are seen as an internal expert. They will also provide mentoring, guidance, and career growth mapping to Lead Software Engineers, Senior Software Engineers, and other junior members of the team.

What will you do as an Engineering Team Lead?

The successful candidate will help build and lead a team of software engineers to cater to the needs of Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The Engineering Team Lead will be tasked with managing the performance of a team, focusing on career growth and development, ensuring that the team is capable of continuous delivery.

You will lead a cross-functional and self-managing agile team that creates secure, scalable, reusable, elegant and loveable solutions that allow for collaboration across different parts of the business. Part of the team's goal is to leverage on AI tools and incorporate those in our ways of working.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the developing and maintaining of complex, feature-rich web services and applications with different technologies in accordance with the agreed coding standards and software engineering best practices and principles (i.e., SOLID & DRY principles)
  • Spearhead the development of solutions based on industry standard architectural principles and in compliance with organisational information security policies while maximizing our AWS partner agreement.
  • Enabling the team to carry out solutions and code review, develop expertise of systems and building confidence in the tools being used by the team.
  • Manage personal development proactively by demonstrating the willingness to learn new skills and technologies, keeping abreast of latest technology developments and trends, using Continuing Professional Development (CPD) tools that are available to our organisation, and working with their line manager to identify own training needs and line reports'.


What makes you the ideal candidate for this role?

You are the ideal candidate if you have extensive understanding of software development and engineering principles (i.e., SOLID & DRY) and the elements of SDLC in a commercial environment complemented by at least 5 years of solid web development. You have the capability to work in a dynamic environment that allows for continuous refinement of roles, processes and toolsets. A wide array of experience in leading a team by influence or through direct line management is also a must for the role, along with an observable ability to coach, inspire and empower members of the team to enable seamless implementation of change.

  • Web Development experience in the ff. preferred languages: ReactJS, GO Lang, Typescript, NodeJS, VueJS; (Experience in other languages will also be considered)
  • Experience in Agile development whether it may be Scrum, Scrumban and/or Kanban and in setting up tooling and processes for successful development teams.
  • Demonstrable understanding on how modern web applications work, how content can integrate with different systems, how to implement software development approaches and technologies, and how to produce clear and well written documentation for use with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to stay open-minded and to listen to feedback from across the business to enable continuous improvement, observable proactive style and ability to think flexibly and quickly, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
