Your Role

As a Design Operations Manager, you will:

  • Provide mentorship to design staff, providing oversight and guidance for all milestones and deliverables, facilitating internal sign offs with leadership. You will work closely with the Design Operations Manager to ensure the design intent is met and the user experience is of the highest Quality.
  • Monitor workload and process, design tools (Templates, paragraph styles, character styles, bleed, and quality) and resource allocation to ensure timelines and business objectives are met.
  • Oversees workload by assigning projects to design staff as needed.
  • Provides experiences and training that maintains highest level of competency among designers. Influences project direction by acting as integral part of design team.
  • Mentors others by sharing business and design expertise.
  • Encourage staff to recognise where an advert could be done/look better and to send design ideas to the relevant sales person to discuss with their client
  • All other task assigned as needed by Design Operations Team Manager and as required by the Creative Services Department.

Team Targets And Performance

  • Develop and manage the design scope of all project work.
  • Advertising Production (Advert , Editorial and Classie)
  • Senior Graphic Design Projects
  • Admin Themes
  • Effectively coordinate all design deliverables and follow projects from assignment through successful completion and ensuring quality sign offs. This includes, but is not limited to layouts, design packages, pictures processing, bleed management, graphic design quality documentation and general commercial work.
  • Lead the coordination of all design disciplines on a team of senior graphic designers, editorial layout and prepress designers to design, coordinate, and execute multiple simultaneous quality task in-line with Star News Group brand standards and best practices.
  • Manage external consultants; coordinate with offshore designers on all projects.
  • Be a key member of a collaborative management team, working closely with design operations managers.
  • Provide mentorship, support, coaching and direction to members of the design team, including comment on their work and monthly performance reviews.
  • Ensure all design scope and deliverables comply with designs templates.
  • Institute documentation and project management standards.
  • Communicate project updates regularly to management and cross functional teams such as the status of each task, potential issues, risks, etc.
  • Make critical path decisions to ensure the overall success of any project work, including being on time, on budget, and to an exceptional level of design quality.
  • Manage a team of internal designers and external consultants to proactively flag any design deliverable issues that may arise during the entire project, to take ownership of them, and to work together to resolve them.
  • Lead onsite and external team meetings as needed, providing clear, concise and actionable agendas and communication.
  • Ensure design deliverables adhere to any quality assurance policies and procedures for design, documentation and project management.
  • Provide project and staff related insights to leadership in order to support performance, workflow and design efficiency improvements across the studio.
  • Interview and provide feedback on select applicants to the design operations manager and provide monthly training performance reviews for new hires.
  • Issue Monthly, Midyear and Annual performance reviews and coaching requirements and exercise performance management.

Reporting And Monitoring

  • Direct reporting to Star News Group Design Operations Manager proactively manage and resolve calendar conflicts due to scheduling shifts , staffing requirement and leave shrinkage.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Design Team Managers and Senior Graphic Designers within Design and across the product creation matrix to increase efficiencies and ensure design excellence
  • Work with various department and SNG POC’s to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of the agreed changed processes
  • Sending of end of day reporting on the team daily completion sent to the Design Operations Manager
  • Issue written and verbal communication within team for quality and compliance monitoring.
  • Facilitate creative review meetings, including internal team meetings/trainings and work sessions
  • Partner with MS operations teams throughout the organization to align milestone timing and optimize
  • processes
  • Assist with the development / improvement, implementation and management of policies and/or processes.
  • Manage unplanned day-to-day operational tasks/duties/responsibilities

Liaison Management

  • Represent assigned area of responsibility between Star News Group and MicroSourcing management and professional capacity within the design function and to cross-functional shared services department.

Staffing And Training

  • Ensure incentive, recognition and retention targets are implemented.
  • Ensure training plans are implemented to enhance skills and competencies
  • Create and implement training plan in line with Individual Development Plan
  • Create an environment that supports the mentoring and coaching to support development, growth and high performance.
  • Identify potential future talent within the Star News Group to support retention strategies.
  • Implement MS approved policies and processes around disciplinary and performance management issues up to an including termination in a compliant way.
