Senior Farm Supervisor

Job Description Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Farm Supervisor for our okra farming operations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in crop management with a strong emphasis on using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) who has the ability to use non-chemical pest control methods such as natural predators, crop diversity, and habitat manipulation and/or to ensure the efficient production of high-quality okra with minimal chemical usage.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Diploma or degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Extensive knowledge of okra cultivation, pest management, and crop health.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience managing large-scale vegetable farming.
- Proven track record of using IPM techniques to reduce chemical pesticide usage.
- Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of okra cultivation practices, including soil preparation, planting, fertilization, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling.
- Familiarity with the natural predators such as ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitoid wasps to control pests like aphids and whiteflies.
- Knowledge of organic farming methods or sustainable agricultural practices is a plus.
- Supervisory Skills:
- Proven ability to lead and manage a team of farm laborers, ensuring efficient and timely completion of tasks.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills to ensure proper coordination of farming activities.
- Ability to train and motivate farm workers on best practices in okra farming and safety procedures.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in outdoor environments under various weather conditions.
- Physically capable of performing manual tasks related to farming.
- Problem-Solving Abilities:
- Strong problem-solving skills for handling unexpected challenges, such as pests, diseases, or equipment failures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage all phases of okra production, from soil preparation to harvesting.
- Implement and monitor crop schedules, ensuring the timely planting, irrigation, and harvesting of okra.
- Ensure the farm’s compliance with health and safety regulations and environmental standards.
- Monitor pest, disease, and weed control, ensuring the proper use of chemicals and organic solutions.
- Design and implement anIntegrated Pest Management (IPM) program to manage or reduce the costing of chemical usage by at least 20%.
- Keep up-to-date records of pest outbreaks, pesticide use, and biological control measures.
- Conduct soil tests and recommend improvements to optimize soil health for okra cultivation.
- Oversee water management techniques such as drip irrigation to ensure water use efficiency.
- Ensure high-quality produce and work to minimize crop loss.
