Sales Tax Accountant

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a skilled Sales Tax Accountant to join our client's dynamic team. As part of our client's fire safety company, which operates across multiple states and performs both service and construction work, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with sales tax regulations, managing multistate filings, and own and optimize tax processes. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a niche industry while collaborating with both service and construction teams.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Sales Tax Compliance: Prepare and file multistate sales tax returns, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.
• Tax Research & Analysis: Stay up to date with changing state and local tax laws, especially as they pertain to both construction and service, and advise management on potential impacts.
• Audits & Inquiries: Manage sales tax audits and respond to state and local tax notices.
• Tax Exemptions: Review and validate customer tax exemption certificates, ensuring accurate application across service and construction projects.
• Process Improvement: Identify and implement improvements in sales tax processes to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
• Internal Collaboration: Work closely with office managers, service personnel, and the finance team to ensure proper sales tax application for varying business operations.
• External Collaboration: Coordinate with external tax firm by providing required documentation and requests timely and accurately
• Documentation: Maintain thorough records of all sales tax filings and support schedules for audit readiness.
  
  
  

EXPERIENCE:

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Experience: 5+ years of experience in sales tax accounting, preferably in a multistate environment.
• Technical Skills: Proficient in tax software (Avalara experience is a plus); ERP systems (Sage Intacct experience preferred); Billing Software (Service Trade experience is a plus); Strong Excel skills.
• Knowledge: In depth understanding of multistate sales tax regulations and familiarity with tax implications for service and construction businesses.
• Soft Skills: Excellent attention to detail, problem solving abilities, and communication skills.
