Summary of Work Activities and Responsibilities:
The Laboratory Technician supports faculty members for laboratory experiments and researches which involves preparing essential materials, configuring and overseeing necessary equipment, and ensuring smooth operational flow within the laboratory environment.
This position’s responsibilities also involve the meticulous management of laboratory equipment and supplies inventory, and maintenance efforts to sustain optimal functionality.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
I. Laboratory Operations
- Provides support to teachers and students for laboratory experiments and researches
- Secures and prepares equipment and materials needed
- Guides laboratory users on safe use and handling of equipment and chemicals
- Observes laboratory experiments carefully and answers questions when necessary especially regarding Green Education activities
- Supports simultaneous classes when needed
- Ensures that the laboratory is functioning well, clean, and organized
- Checks all laboratory and audio-visual equipment regularly and secures them when not in use
- Keeps all hazardous chemicals safely and neatly stored and safely disposes any hazardous wastes appropriately following established standards
- Performs troubleshooting and minor repair of equipment, as needed
- Oversees the scheduling, upkeep, and maintenance of the proposed Green Education activities such greenhouse, hydroponics, aquaponics, etc. to ensure smooth operations and avoid facility and/or resource scheduling conflicts
- Performs first-aid emergency measures for accidents, and coordinates next steps for handling the emergency with the appropriate individuals/units as needed
- Monitors and secures experimental set-ups in the laboratory (indoor and outdoor) and external areas
- Fabricates improvised laboratory apparatus and other necessary tools to support experiments and research activities
II. Support for Science Subject Area
- Provides support and collaborates with faculty members in planning and managing Green education activities
- Assists in identifying requirements and specifications for fabrication work needed for projects/experiments, and carries out the actual fabrication of materials
- Designs, constructs, fabricates, and/or improvises instruments and materials to facilitate convenience and safety in experimental set-ups
- Inspects and identifies causes for malfunctioning fabricated/improvised instruments, and troubleshoots accordingly
- Participates in brainstorming activities/consultations in relation to the execution of the AJHS’s Green Education Activities
- Participates and collaborates during subject area faculty meetings by actively engaging, contributing insights, and staying informed about departmental matters
- Attends Science laboratory technicians’ meetings facilitated by the Subject Area Coordinator/Science Laboratory Manager and the head technician to foster cohesive communication and sharing of best practices
- Provides laboratory and other essential support to the various Science Subject Area programs and activities as needed
- Keeps abreast of new laboratory technologies and equipment by attending training programs and workshops, and translates acquired knowledge by providing practical recommendations for the subject area
- Performs research and benchmarking with other schools to recommend latest available laboratory technologies
- Actively participates in Emergency Response and Safety efforts of the school, particularly those pertaining to the laboratory facilities
III. Performs other duties as may be required by the immediate supervisor or authorized representative.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Science or other related courses
- With background on Green Education initiatives is an advantage
- At least 1 year of relevant work experience
