CSS is looking to identify a Hazardous Material Manager/Transportation Specialist to support an upcoming federal contract. This position is in our Environmental, Safety and Health division. CSS is a professional and technical services provider to government and commercial clients. Our services are organized into four business lines and several cross-cutting services that we have cultivated through our 32 years of corporate experience. The four business lines are Earth, Space & Life Sciences, Emergency Response & Disaster Recovery, Environmental, Safety & Health, and Natural Resources Management.   • Supports environmental assessments, investigations, and remediation efforts at federal facilities
  • Directs the proper collection, assessment, sorting, storage, packing, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials and wastes (chemical substances, toxic materials, liquids, solids, as well as investigation-related wastes)
  • Determines the proper method of accumulation and disposal based on hazard classes
  • Advises on proper hazardous waste management techniques and analyzes unknown hazardous waste streams to correctly classify wastes for proper disposal
  • Researches and assesses appropriate facilities to accept hazardous waste for treatment, storage or disposal (TSD); confirms status of facilities prior to shipping
  • Labels wastes and prepares shipping manifests in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations and TSD facility requirements
  • Prepares hazardous waste documentation and updates databases as required
  • Inspects works sites for compliance with federal, state, and local hazardous waste management laws and regulations; identifies nonconformance issues and monitors corrective actions
  • Supports training and outreach efforts regarding hazardous materials and waste management
  • Supervises subcontractors as required



  • Bachelor's degree in an environmental science and 2-4 years of experience
  • Project-based knowledge of hazardous waste cleanup and disposal processes and best practices
  • Knowledge of chemical compatibility and hazard classes
  • Knowledge of Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) as it applies to the generation, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials, in compliance with 49 CFR 172, Subpart H
  • Knowledge of and US Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) training preferred
  • Desirable: experience applying US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) environmental regulations related to Comprehensive Environmental and RCRA sites on field investigation projects
  • Desirable: knowledge of Defense Environmental Restoration Program (DERP) or Department of Defense (DoD) operations, activities, and installations
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER training and 8-hour refresher preferred
  • Able to travel, as needed
  • Able to work outdoors in a variety of field conditions
  • The successful candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, able to maintain records, and work both independently and collaboratively with co-workers and partners in field settings
  • Good communication and computer skills required
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check
  • Position requires US citizenship and participation in medical monitoring
